Apple's Jonathan Ive Considering Moving Back to England?

The Sunday Times reports that Apple designer Jonathan Ive and the Apple's board of directors are at an impasse about his future. The British designer is said to want to spend more time in the UK while Apple's board seems unwilling to allow that. The report comes by way of The Daily Mail and Cult of Mac as the original article appears to behind The Sunday Times' paywall.

Ive has reportedly been tied to Apple for the past three years based on a "golden handcuffs" deal from 2008. That deal is reportedly due now and will net the designer £18 million. The completion of this deal seemed to open these negotiations with even the possibility of his leaving the company. Ive reportedly has proposed to commute from Somerset, but Apple's board seems unwilling.
A friend of the family told The Sunday Times: 'Unfortunately he is just too valuable to Apple and they told him in no uncertain terms that if he headed back to England he would not be able to sustain his position with them.'
Jonathan Ive has long been credited for being the principal designer for many of Apple's iconic products.Ive joined Apple in 1992 and has been responsible for the design of the unibody MacBook Pro, iPod, iPhone and iPad. His name was even thrown around as a possible successor to Steve Jobs in 2007.

Above reported by macrumors.

Personally I think it is a testament to british designers that Jonathan Ive is regarded so highly that he is valued by a company so dedicated to great product design.

Apple would surely miss his genius but so does his homeland.

Jonathan Ive can certainly succeed in anything he wants to do. I would love to see him be the successor to Steve Jobs.

He truly is a guiding light and a visionary much like Jobs is and he would be a great leader for Apple in my opinion

Good Luck Jonathan, Great Britain loves you still.

POLICE PAY PHOTOGRAPHER THOUSANDS IN DELETED IMAGES ROW

A man has won $40,000 in damages after police in the United States confiscated his camera phone and deleted images he had taken of them in a public place.

Marlon Kautz from Atlanta had been filming officers as they arrested someone last April when he was told he had no right to record them.

Kautz belongs to a group that films police activity using cameras and mobile phones.

The aim of 'Copwatch' is that officers can be held accountable for any wrongdoing.

He claimed that one officer snatched the phone from his hand. 'Kautz said that when asked to get his phone back, another officer said he'd return it only after Kautz gave him the password… so he could delete the footage,' reports The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Kautz refused but when police returned his phone the images had been 'deleted, altered or damaged'.

Germ of an Idea: Hong Kong Researchers Store Data in Bacteria

by DAVE CURLEE on FEBRUARY 2, 2011
in BLOG
For years our data storage capabilities have been doubling (or better) in capacity every year or two. When I started computing back in the early 1980′s, I was loading programs on my Atari 800 from a data tape drive. As I graduated to my Commodore 64C, I started using 5 1/4 inch floppy disks.
In 1991 my Hyundai 386 16mhz PC came with a 100 megabyte hard drive. That’s megabyte, not gigabyte. I didn’t get a 1gb drive until 1995 when I bought my Dell Pentium 90 PC.
In 2011, most of us are buying one terabyte drives or higher on a regular basis. I personally have about 10TB of storage at my home studio and at the Livid Lobster studios we’re at 20TB or better.
What amazes me is that right now, it would appear that there is no real end in site for increased capacities. However, scientists are predicting that we may soon reach that undefined limit as we reach the physical boundaries for magnetic media.
Over the past decade, engineers have been researching various forms of data storage. Optical storage has significantly increased in capacity with Blu-ray discs. Raid arrays and SAS networks have allowed us to daisy-chain clusters of hard drives and create virtual hard drives with monumental capacities. I even read an article once where scientists were trying to store data three-dimensionally in crystals.
Researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong have been experimenting with storing data in… bacteria.  Yeah, bacteria.  They’ve managed so far to store 90GB of data in one gram of cells. The data is also encrypted and compressed using DNA sequence shuffling.
The research team believes that they can not only store text, but photo, audio and video data as well. They’re continuing to test but so far have proven that they can convert and store the data as DNA as well as retrieve it with no loss of data integrity.
Where will this go?  Time will tell.  I’m guessing that since our bodies are loaded with both good and bad bacteria we may be able to use portions of our body for data storage.  Maybe not.  I’d hate to eat a piece of cheese and completely wipe out my family vacation pictures…

Nikon Event Slated for 9th February?

Nikon will be holding a press conferences in multiple countries on February 9th, 2011 (Wednesday). For all US readers this means that new products will be announced between 11:00pm and midnight EST on February 8th (NR probability rating: 99%).

As of today I am certain only about two new point and shoot cameras to be announced on February 9th – the Coolpix P500 that will have 22.5-810mm (x36) zoom, 12MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and will cost 299 EUR. The second Coolpix model will have a 24-100mm zoom and fast f/1.8 aperture.

There was a good chance that Nikon will announce a successor of the discontinued Nikon D5000, but since I haven’t heard anything till now, I doubt it will happen.

As I mentioned before, this announcement date precisely matches the opening date of the CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show in Japan (February 9-12, 2011). Expect all new Nikon products to be on display at that show. If you are in Yokohama and will be visiting the show, please send me some pictures of/with the new Nikon gear.
